Body Surface Area Calculator

Calculate Body Surface Area (BSA) based on height and weight, supporting both Mosteller and DuBois formulas. BSA is used in medicine for chemotherapy dosing, burn area assessment, and other clinical calculations.

Medical Applications
Body Surface Area (BSA) is an important clinical indicator, primarily used in the following scenarios:
  • Chemotherapy Dosing: Many anticancer drugs are dosed by body surface area (mg/m2)
  • Burn Assessment: The "Rule of Nines" is used to assess burn area percentage
  • Glomerular Filtration Rate: eGFR calculation requires BSA correction
  • Cardiac Output Index: Cardiac index = Cardiac output / Body Surface Area
  • Basal Metabolic Rate: Some formulas involve BSA correction

Frequently Asked Questions
The Mosteller formula (BSA = sqrt((cm x kg)/3600)) is newer and simpler, making it the most widely used formula today. The DuBois formula (BSA = 0.007184 x cm^0.725 x kg^0.425) is the classic formula. The difference between their results is very small.
A normal adult BSA is approximately 1.5-2.0 m2, varying with height and weight. The average for Chinese adults is approximately 1.6-1.8 m2.
